Question:

My husband and my kids want a dog but I don’t think they have any idea what a big commitment it is.

I keep telling them that apart from training and walking we’ll also have to pay for insurance, vet’s bills, food and kennel fees when we’re away on holiday but they’re not paying any attention.

I’m a nurse and work 12 hour shifts three times a week so although it would be ok for me to look after a dog on the days I’m not working, on the other days they’d have to take turns at coming home from school at lunchtime and it worries me as I’m not sure that they would.

We already have a cat and although they all say they love it none of them have ever fed it, washed its bowl or even groomed it so I think all of the work of looking after a dog would end up being done by me.

Answer:

If you are prepared to consider it then your family should be prepared to prove that they can keep their promises, but this is not a short term exercise.

Write down the expected outlay for a year – can you afford it financially first of all and what would they be prepared to give up for good to make sure that you do? Also note the time spent training and exercising a cute puppy and detail what their duties would actually be on a weekly basis.

Start a rota to care for the cat and let them get on with it, but don’t agree to too short a trial period – you should be looking at 3 or 6 months here, if not longer. If they’re that keen they’ll come up with the goods and stick with it.

A dog’s care is actually quite different and more time consuming than a cat’s, so try a couple of other ways to see how they would deal with that.

Firstly, if you have a friend with a dog and you could bear the responsibility ask if you can look after it next time they’re on holiday and give it totally into your family’s care, resisting any temptation to let them off the hook especially when it comes to clearing up after it.

Similarly, if there any pet rescue shelters nearby get your husband and kids to sign-up as volunteers doing regular walking, grooming and caring for the animals.

If they manage to do all that properly then you might have to give in. Dogs make wonderful pets and can be a great addition to a family especially if everyone else is doing the chores and you just get to enjoy the benefits.

to say not to consider insurance is the wrong thing to say, i know a family who just got a new puppy and the dog has been to the vet for everything, bee bites (in which she is allergic) rash's and cutting herself. if you do get a dog get insurance its the smart thing to do
I always wanted a dog, Mum just wouldnt give in. So I got a job and a house so I could finally get one... then two... then three. About two years later she gave in and my younger sisters now have a dog. We go to obedience classes together, walks etc. It is a big commitment but who else is *always* happy to see you when you get home from work?
Thank you Fred for putting things in perspective.
Good God woman. You can just say no. Get control of your family. Get a "real problem".
It is important to reallise that a dog should never be considered as anything other than a true member of its family. It is not a possession, so everyone must treat it with the love and respect they give each other. On the subject of pet health insurance, I would not even consider it. 99% of dog under the age of 10, rarely get sick if looked after and fed a proper diet. Once a year check up and needles, is usually all that will be needed. After 10, that tends to change quite a bit, much like us, as we get older, our health deteriorates as well. Pet Insurance firms, cover less and less as the animal ages, so by the time you really NEED the help, its not available to you. I have found it is easier to have $15 per week put into a seperate bank account for the express purpose of paying for vet bills and medicines. That amount builds up hugely over the years, and by the time your animal is costing you $1000 per year for example the funds are there, its peace of mind.Goodluck.
Dog groomers are everywhere, sometimes they are just at your doorstep, it's just a matter of if you can afford them. When you're ready, to buy a dog ,or even a parrot remember having a pet is costly. Pet insurance, food, exercise playing with them at the park (otherwise you need to get a house with a big garden- it's not fair on the pet if he can't play in your backyard). Also remember you have to pick up the dog poo (a must, so many dog owners just leave their dog poos lying on the pavement, it's so UNHYGIENIC).
there is a way out of insurance and any financal cost to you if you would like a dog, and would like to trial out having one. Be a foster carer, look after a dog in your home till its adopted and all the financail cost are covered by the company eg monikas rescue does this and i think more people should concider this as you then dont have to worry when you go away on holiday no extra boarding fee etc
It's good to see you are aware of what goes into to looking after a dog. So many dogs get brought into families, loved for awhile, and then when the novelty wears off get abandoned. I understand your concerns as well. My family also has a cat and I do tend to do all the caring for the cat and they are nowhere near as much work as a dog. I had to put my foot down with my family. I now feed the cat, my husband changes her litter (as I am pregnant) and my son has to get her in before cerfew each evening. If your whole family is aware of the responsibilities and you all chip in and share the load then you can all enjoy the benefits of having a beautiful dog as a part of your family. Good luck and I hope it works out for you all

For all these people who have commented " you don't know what it's like to be a step parent" blah blah blah.... who are you trying to kid?? And for those saying that you have your own kids and step kids and the step kids are manipulative etc etc, are you blind and dumb? Your kids are not perfect either i bet! I bet your kids are just as rude when you are not around! I have a 12 year old daughter and i have been with my partner for 5 years. He struggles alot with my daughter because she gives him hell. She has said several times she wishes it was just me and her again, but because my partner loves me he sticks it out and knows that it's just her trying to get her own way. He loves her and would do anything for her no matter what she does, that's what's good parents do. If you can't warm to a child or don't like your soon to be step child then dont marry the parent. You are just being selfish otherwise. Just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot...b81die, Brisbane29 CommentsPost commentView comments

Yes the type of cancer was one of the least lethal but none the less she had cancer attacking her body. she had chemo, i've watched some of my closest friends on chemo and it is always so horrific. She has pushed past that and made brilliant songs. Her music is heartfelt. She sis so beautiful and in her flim clips she dresses with dignity and respect unlike other artist who just let everything hang out and sing about sex, drugs and alcohol. She was put on the voice because she is ment to be there the people who run the show chose her. don't like it ? simple don't watch it. If you don't like her as an artist fine, don't buy her albums. She is human and she has feelings, give the woman a break.Cathh.Ann, QLD, Gold Coast27 CommentsPost commentView comments Darren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaDarren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaI love her !!wiz, melbourne16 CommentsPost commentView comments Grant and Candice: Why they splitGrant and Candice: Why they splitGive the guy a break!
