Melissa and Rosemary introduce their new babies to KATHERINE CHATFIELD.

Melissa Keevers and Rosemary Nolan beam as they cradle baby son Noah in their arms. But Noah isn’t the only new addition to the family. He’s big brother to fellow quintuplets Charlie, Eireann, Evie and Abby. Same-sex Brisbane couple Mel, 27, and Rosie, 22, have waited to meet the babies since they revealed to Woman’s Day last October they were expecting quins, conceived with a US sperm donor. “We got very teary when they were born,” Rosie smiles. “It was such a journey before they arrived that when we actually met them we realised what it was all for.”

The babies are still tiny after being born at 26 weeks, four days. “In the days leading up, I knew it was coming,” Mel says. “I had more and more contractions. At one point I spent three days in the birthing suite – they wouldn’t let me leave in case it happened!

“On January 2 at 10.30pm I was having contractions, and at 11pm the doctor examined me and told me to call Rosie because I was going to have the babies.” Rosie laughs and says, “I was running around like a headless chicken! I was in shock thinking it was actually going to happen.” “She says she didn’t speed to get to the hospital but she arrived in record time!” adds Mel.

With a team of 25 hospital staff assembled, Mel was wheeled to theatre for a C-section. “I wasn’t nervous about the procedure,” she says. “I just wanted them to be born OK. I didn’t take any risk for myself into account.” Fortunately, the five babies – two boys and three girls – were born between 2.06am and 2.11am on January 3, in an operation that ran like clockwork.

“Noah came first, and then a minute later was Charlie,” Mel says. “Then after another minute came Eireann, and then Evie and Abby. Abby was the smallest because she was sitting lowest in me, so she had the weight of the others on top of her.”

Homosexual couples are not recognised by Centrelink, I hope you people realise. And AI (artificial insemination) is either done by an anonymous donor or they can use sperm of a friend or known person. Whether or not the "known person" wants to be recognised as the "father" is no one else's business. And as for some loser saying children need a father in their upbringing because it's "normal", what about children who live in single parent homes, or in foster care. That, to them, is what is normal, not what anyone else thinks. And I'm sure if some heterosexual couple asked for donations for the same thing, people would be right on it because they wouldn't want the children to "suffer". How are these miracles any different?
centrelink dont give u that much money for kids (i think its 60 for each kid per fortnight..wow alot) and as for the baby bonus, im sure thatll be spent on a 7 seater car and car seats - and baby furniture just because they were having 5 babies doesnt mean they should abort it - it is life.. u take what u get - some people cant even have kids as for them asking for money ...who cares... if people want to give it to them its their choice, We get the luxury of having family wanting to mind kids, i dont think too many people would put their hand up for 5! theyll go thru more nappies formula need more toys bottles clothes... a bad parent would be someone who wouldnt bother to seek better options for their kids, in this case their asking for money..i say...why not!
I don't really care if the couple is gay or straight. But to set up a website and ask people for donations "to help us raise our kids and to make life a little bit more easier for us", its just.... I mean, come on! Those ladies will receive lots from Centrelink and even thats not enough for them! Maybe the other one should go and get a job or something... The kids can always go to day care... I wish I could get "donations" to help me support my lifestyle! But, that won't be happening anytime soon, just like there will be no "donations" from me to this couple and their kids.
i, for one, would NEVER give money to these ladies, not because of their sexual orientation, but because they chose to have the babies, and should therefore take the responsibility themselves of course we are ALL already "donating", with our taxes.... child support, baby bonus etc i hope they have a record of the father so when there is a medical problem, they can do a family search if necessary also, i wonder if being the father of quins will make him publicity hungry ????
Just a quick note to everyone out there - The quins were conceived without the help of IVF. The pregnancy is the product of AI (Artificial Insemination), there was no egg pick up and no fertiliastion occured outside the body. This was a one in 60 million chance. I am pretty sure that if this kind of miracle occured with a hertosexual couple there would be nothing but praise and no one would even mention a selective reduction. They wanted to fall pregnant and have another baby they got five, would it not be hipocriticle to then terminate somthing they worked so hard to acheive. Love to Mel, Rosie, Lily, Eireann, Abby, Evy, Noah and Charlie. Best of luck for the future and may the road ahead be full of love support and friendship.
I read this in the newspaper on the weekend and was not happy that they had advertised that they had set up a website to accept donations to bring up their children.. I'm sorry but there are more people in need of money like people who lost their homes in the floods and cyclone. They need to be able to raise their children on their own and not ask the public for help, they knew what they were getting themselves into in the first place.
I really couldn't care less if this couple was hetrosexual or lesbian. What really gets me is that they already have one child, then had another lot of donor sperm, at what cost, then went ahead to have the five babies and had all this large team of doctors and nurses ready for the delievery, then they are in intensive care, and the tying up of hospital facilities, and again at what cost. With only one working on a call centre wage, and you show one bathroom in a small house. You would of been paid for this story and TV appearances, and will get Gov. assistance, which I don't think you deserve. And now you have the cheek to ask for help with donations. No ladies you wanted these babies and really didn't think how to pay for them. I for one do not think you are wonderful, for your irrsponsible behaviour. You wanted them you pay for them.
Good luck ladies you deserve to be happy and if have these children do that good on you. I just hope I am as luck as you both and get to have the baby I long for.
Some of these comments to me suggest that some ppl are still not accepting of homosexuality. I want congratulate these two women on motherhood and good luck to the future. Lets support gay rights.
So many children are born into hetero relationships & are abused one way or another. So what if they are lesbians, as long as they can provide all the love, care & guidance that any child born deserves. Yes multiple births do happen with IVF, were they expected to abort because there was more than one baby? I cannot stand narrow minded people. More love & caring about our fellow human beings are needed in this world, it just might be a better place to live. Too many people are judgemental & some downright nasty! Wishing the new parents & adorable little babies all the best.
