Question
"My 6-month-old male cat has always had a somewhat interesting habit. He insists on sucking his own nipples! It seems to happen most when he's going to sleep or getting cuddles. How do I stop him from doing it?"
Samantha
Answer
This sounds like one kitten that still struggles with the concept of 'weaning'. With mum's nipples now gone, he's decided to look closer to home for a solution! And while it seems curious, and perhaps even cute, there is a real reason why he's doing it.
You see, it's all about comfort. When he was a kitten, suckling on mum made him feel like his world was complete. That single act sustained him as well as making him feel loved. Now, he uses suckling to make him feel that same 'high'.
It may very well be something he simply grows out of. But if it persists, or he begins to cause infections around his nipples, then there are some things you can try.
First of all, you could find a substitute for the suckling. Try placing a pet-friendly stuffed toy next to his mouth when he starts suckling and direct his attention onto it instead. Alternatively, you could apply a 'bitterant' (a bitter tasting liquid) to his nipples to deter him from his slightly humorous habit.
