Behaviour of children with ADHD improves with elimination diet

Children with ADHD should be placed on special diets to identify foods that may trigger disruptive behaviour before behaviour-changing drugs are considered, Dutch researchers have recommended.

Researchers from the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands found that significant improvements were found when children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were given a controlled diet.

"We think that dietary intervention should be considered in all children with ADHD," the researchers, led by Dr Lidy Pelsser, wrote in the Lancet.

The research, which was conducted on 100 children aged four to eight with ADHD, found that restricting the range of foods given to children with ADHD can lead to significantly better behaviour.

During the study, half of the children were given a healthy diet, while the other half were given an "elimination" diet that included only a few foods such as rice, meat, vegetables, pears and water.

These children were slowly introduced to other foods including wheat, eggs, peanuts, milk, soy and fish over time.

The researchers said the diets should be tried only with medical supervision and for no longer than five weeks at a time.

Its very humiliating to admit this, but its not until it happened to me that I realized just how "ignorant" I was. I was always under the assumption, that ADHD often was a result of sugar or poor diet. I also believed most kids with ADHD was simply a result of lazy parents and lack of discipline. I am at the moment struggling with my youngest son and I am drained of almost all energy left to get through another day. I am not a lazy or poor parent, I try desperately to raise my children well, and my child does not eat artificially & sugar packed foods but a healthy diet. People who do not know what its like to have a child with this issue are unable to empathize and realize just how heart breaking, and full on this is. Its constant, does not let up and drives parents to breaking point. We have at least ID'ed one food responsible -Tomatoes. Any comment Kiln Queen?.
After trying every other option we were recommended by a natropath to try a Gluten and Dairy free diet to see if my 7 year olds behaviour improved, it did for about 4 weeks until he started to realise what he was missing and became angry. At around week 5 with no changes to the diet it failed and I made the decision to go onto medication. Within 2 days I had a child who was not only settled (which is all the diet did) but I have a child who stops and thinks about actions and consequences and is finally learning! I was against Meds and I believe I tried everything before we used them but they have been our saviour!
I have three children and one has adhd, we havent tried a diet yet but i have recently noticed that when he has breakfast cereal for breakfast which is wheatbix 1 teaspoon of sugar and milk my sons behaviour at school is noticably worse than if he has toast or eggs on toast for breakfast. its hard because you need a lot of assistance from the school. good luck mums and stay strong
can someone please tell me what you can do to help an adult with adhd who cant take any medication because he is a drug addict which he says makes him feel normal but i am paying the ultimate price desprate mother please help me someone.
i have a 3 year old with adhd typical behaviours. she has NOT been diagnosed, but had a behavioural assessment that scored her at 69 out of 80 - normal is 12 - 30 - before starting an elimination diet. she scored 8 out of 80 only five weeks after being on the diet. she is on a low chemical diet as diagnosed by dietitian Joan Breakey whose website can be googled, try ozemail.com.au breakey. She sleeps ALL NIGHT IN HER OWN BED, a near miracle, has no night terrors, no violent attacks on me and her father. she listens fairly readily at a normal 3 year old level, and can be managed easily with gentle and firm voices and the occasional firm grip. she is no longer resistant when we are affectionate but is physically expressive and gentle. she is VERY energetic, but no MORE frenetic non-stop hyper behavior 14 hours a day. after 7 months of a new delightful easy going child i would encourage any parent to at least read the free articles Breakey supplies before giving your child drugs.
Whilst this trial certainly provided some promising signs for the dietary management of ADHD, but where this report falls down is... 1. Only 40% of children with ADHD improved with the elimination diet, most of who regressed when a normal diet was reinstated. Forty percent is still a lot. 2. How is a parent with a child who has had an ADHD diagnosis supposed to follow this, "included only a few foods such as rice, meat, vegetables, pears and water"? A bit more information, or a link to somewhere with more information is not an option. All that said, no-one is going to tell you not to provide your child with an healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and whole-grains.
My son is 13 and we've tried everything, from diets, to supplements, to medication. All I can say, is that every ADHD child is different, and what works for one won't necessarily work for another. Mumothree, I agree, no effort is too much for a positive result, but spellcheka, I hear you when you talk about the stress of having a child like this in your life. As for you Kiln Queen - it's easy to point fingers without having walked in that poor mother's shoes, now isn't it? Just for the record - there is no scientific corrolation between sugar intake and activity levels in children. It may have been the nuts, but it wasn't the sugar! Check your facts before you're so quick to voice your (uneducated) opinon - you have NO idea what we mothers with kids with special needs go through, be it desperation, financial ruin (to fund the next 'cure' craze), exhaustion, family breakdown and just sheer heartbreak, trying to find a way in the world for your little one!!
A lady I know has a son who is just simply out of control with his behaviour. As far as I am aware the child had never been to see a specialist about this. Then one day I saw them and he seemed rather subdued, so I asked his mum if she had put him on meds to calm him down. Her reply, no she'd taken him off Nutella. Well, duh!! Everybody knows that sugary foods hype kids up, we shouldn't need a study to tell us this.......
This approach is nothing new for these kids. I did all this 20 years ago with my son and there were negligible benefits for all the effort. When Mum is already stressed with all that having an ADHD kid entails, doing an elimination diet is just something more she has to do. Sorry but this is just the modern rehash of the Feingold diet. It sounds promising in theory but is very disappointing in the practical application.
We have followed this diet for my son with ADHD since he was 4yrs old - he's now almost 13- and would recommend it to anyone struggling with this condition. The effects differ from child to child, as we have seen with our other two children, but as our dietitian commented " it's like someone flicked a switch.." Our paediatrician was a non-believer until he saw the results too. The results far outweight any effort required to get started. If you want more information, read Sue Dengate's book 'Fed Up' - a really good read from a parent's perspective.
