Aussies are against sex selection: report

A recent survey has revealed Australians disapprove of IVF sex selection but would prefer a "balanced" family with one girl and one boy.

The study, led by Dr Rebecca Kippen from the School of Population Health at the University of Melbourne, found that 69 percent of respondents disapproved of the use of IVF for sex selection and 80 percent were against sex-selective abortions.

More than 2500 people participating in the Australian Survey of Social Attitudes, were quizzed on the topic and only 11 percent supported the idea of a hypothetical gender selection pill.

Dr Kippen said people involved in the study were against sex selection for a number of reasons and were concerned about the concept of "designer infants".

"Opposition to these technologies was grounded in three major concerns: the potential for distorted sex ratios; that sex selection can be an expression of gender bias; and a concern about 'designer infants' being created, when parents should be happy with a healthy baby," Dr Kippen said.

Previous behavioural and attitudinal research found that Australian parents want a balanced family, of one boy and one girl.

The research was published in Fertility and Sterility in December last year.

This year the National Health and Medical Research Council is due to review the ban on sex selection, which was established in 2004, and has called for community discussion of issues surrounding sex selection.

The current guidelines surrounding the ban state that "sex selection (by whatever means) must not be undertaken except to reduce the risk of transmission of a serious genetic condition".

Your say: What do you think about sex selection? Do you agree with the study results?

distorted sex ratios? is it just me, or there seem to be more boys born in Australia these days than girls? Out of 12 of my friends who have recently had their babies, 11 were boys! I have 3 boys. In my son's class there are only 3 girls and 18 boys! I am sure most will agree that a family with three boys is more common in Australia than a family with three girls. Clearly, the situation is quite opposite to the one in India or China. So, why does the government pushes this idea of male dominated population as one of their major reasons against gender selection?!
going through IVF myself, I can say I'd dearly love a little girl, my husband would dearly love a little boy... and either way we'd be happy with just a baby, no matter the sex. all you people who want to choose the sex, you dont know how lucky you are to be able to have children so damn easy. If you had to try as hard as we are, you'd know that having 3 boys or 3 girls is not the end of the world... I know one woman with 4 boys and she gets long great with her daughter in law, as though she was her own. if you had none, you'd know how precious one is.
I believe Gender selection should be allowed in Australia for family balancing purposes.. We have two gorgeous little boys and would love a third child. We would love a girl, but obviously we would love a healthy child either sex. This goes without saying as any parent would know... the love that you feel holding your child for the first time when it is born, regardless of what sex it is the love is undeniable). We need IVF for our next baby anyway so why would it be such a problem for us to choose the sex of our next child. I agree with the above comments that it is nobody elses business. Why should every Tom, dick & Harriette, have an opinion to help reject the legalisation of this procedure in Australia when it does not concern them. They don't have to raise the child! Please make it legal. So may families are heading overseas as great expense. I agree with the first comment. Keep the money in Australia. Didn't Australia invent this technology?? Why are we not using it??
There are many couples going overseas to balance their families. It is expensive, painful and difficult. We need to allow it here especially for people who have 2,3 or more of the same gender. People would only come up with the money if they really felt strongly about balancing their families. Please stop the needless abortions, probable PND that inevitably would come to mums who desperately want a girl. Keep the money in this country and help families realise their dreams.
As a mother of 3 boys, we would desperately love to experience having a daughter and our boys would probably love to have a baby sister. Why shouldn't people like us be able to choose the sex of our next child. Shouldn't that be our choice, how would our decision to do something for our own family effect anyone else in the world. This is our life, not anyone elses. If we are prepared to pay the money for IVF to be able to get a daughter, why shouldn't we be able to. Just because some hierachy has decided that sex selection is not moral we can't complete our family, how is that fair??? Can't people see that in cases like ours, being able to choose the sex of a baby would just be an absolute dream come true......it really would. Shouldn't a mother be able to have the right to choose to experience having a daughter if the science is available to do this. WHY???????
When I heard about that couple aborting their twin boys because they weren't girls I was angry. In fact I was ***. Actually *** is an understatement. I've always wanted to have twins and even though I only ended up with one I was still happy. Coming from a strong christian background getting pregnant was frowned upon especially out of wedlock which is exactly what happened to me. One day while i was having lunch with the church members and feeling like a total outcast this youth pastor introduced himself to my mum. They got talking and then she introduced me and told him I was expecting. He knew exactly how I was feeling and said that to be having a child is a wonderful gift. Couples who can't conceive would kill to be able to get pregnant. The fact that women want choices in what sex they get? It's disgusting! They're not a prize that you pick at a fun park. I have 4 brothers, a nephew and a son. Boys rule in my family. But do I care? I'm blessed I can have a child.
Why not just buy one - its what all the celebrities are doing now
I absolutely think it should be ok. We have 4 boys and wanted desperately a girl. But the chances are minimal. If we had the option of having a girl we would take it.WE love our boys, they are great, but I feel like there is something missing. And to be able to choose a girl would be fantastic. I don't agree with being able to choose hair colour, eye colour etc. But it should be ok for families like mine or ones with 3 or more of the same sex to choose. Not first time parents..
For people who have 3 or more children of one gender, I can't see how it could negatively impact anyone for them to be able to choose the gender of their next child if it really means so much to them. Most importantly the resulting child would not be disadvantaged. Certainly it should not be allowed for parents who just want one gender over the other, but if it was done responsibly and for family balancing purposes I can't see a problem with it.
I think that it should come down to the parents who are having the child. not the know it alls out there that have to have a say in everything. if you want to pick the sex of your child I think you should be allowed, my partner and I have two children, both of which are boys who we love to death, but we would both love a little girl. If i haad the choice I would pick. we would love all the children the same no matter what.
