Jesinta Campbell: Mum and I beat the bullies
"When she was upset, I would say, ‘Darling, you are not a victim. Focus on the goodness in that person and see that."
Shari Nementzik
Behind the bright smile, the beauty queen turned TV star has had her troubles, as Shari Nementzik finds out.

On the surface, The Celebrity Apprentice star Jesinta Campbell appears to have it all – beauty, brains and fame. But only a few years ago the former Miss Universe contestant was the target of school bullies. The sporty stunner went through high school and her turbulent teenage years feeling isolated and alone. Fortunately, Jesinta, 20, had her biggest fan – her mother, Valerie, 46 – by her side and they beat the bullies together.

Following an ideal time at primary school on Queensland’s Gold Coast, things turned sour. “A girl from my primary school moved to the same high school as me, and she had started a rumour before I even got there and told everyone not to be my friend,” Jesinta says. “So of course when everyone was pairing up for the first day of high school, no-one wanted to pair up with me or be my buddy.”

She was lucky to have her mum to confide in. “We cried together at times,” Valerie admits. “When she was upset, I would say, ‘Darling, you are not a victim. Focus on the goodness in that person and see that. They are just behaving badly, that’s all. Focus on where you want to go in life and that will get you through. This is an opportunity to grow.”

Eventually, Jesinta changed schools to escape the bullying at the hands of her peers. “Mum used to tell me that people’s opinions of you don’t define you,” she says. “It is how you choose to react to them and how you behave as a person that defines you and what people will remember you for.” Her mum’s words of wisdom have also helped Jesinta deal with drama in the boardroom on the hit series The Celebrity Apprentice.

The Celebrity Apprentice airs weeknights at 7pm on Channel Nine.

Thanks Jesinta for speaking out about this! Its a cause very close to my heart! You are gorgeous and have such an amazing future ahead of you!! All the best!!
i read this because i thought it would have information on how she stopped the bullying. but she didn't beat them, she just ran away from the bullying. which isn't a bad option, to remove yourself from the situation. but she didn't beat them, because they still bullied her while she was around. not taking their comments and actions to heart is good advice, but beating the bullies doesn't just mean coming out the moral victor.
Bullying is part of life. Everybody gets bullied. Many psychologists consider it a law of our social system and its mechanics. If your fat, people are going to tell you. If your ugly, people are going to tell you. If you give them the reaction they'r looking for, then its more than likely true and they'll do it more. If you actually care, then you'r insecure. It would do you great favor in life to get over these insecurities. The problem is people are told to report bullies - not to ignore them, showing no signs of effect or how to make a witty rebuttle. Or alternatively, if you feel there is any ounce of truth to the bullying, change what you can.
I was bullied all through primary school and majority of secondary school. All up until i stopped caring. If anyone said something to my face i'd tell them where to go and any rumours id just ignore. With the help of my parents i realised that these people shouldnt define who i am, and that you are who you make yourself. its good to see that she has gone so far in her career despite all she went through. I bet those people who bullied her are regretting it now!
Whatever limitations the bullying has put on your character or personality, there is still fulfilment to be had out of life. I also am not the social type, and I put it down to bullying, in part. A kindred spirit. Good luck.
I was bullied all throughout primary and high school - beaten up, picked on by boys and girls, insulted, laughed at... you name it. The thing was, I never understood WHY. I was a bit of a nerd, but I was a nice person who just wanted friends. I left school, no friends, and still to this day don't have any either. I'd rather be by myself. Jesinta is a gorgous girl, and yet people bullied her. Good for her and her mum for getting through it. I won't ever be the person I could be and I still don't trust women to this day.
Bullying has a devastating impact on the person who is on the recieving end. And if anyone knows that, I do. Having being the target of extremely cruel ignorant people who have spread malicious soul destroying rumours, and consequently being excluded and ignored due to those rumours, has had a devastating affect on my mental health..being hospitalized twice because of it...that,s how extreme these ugly cowards can be.
Eventually karma catches up with those horrible little trolls who make others lives hell. It may take a while but eventually bullies get whats coming to them.
Im a true believer that things happen for a reason .You are now a stronger, wiser and a far better person for the misfortune of being bulled. People only bully others because they are very insecure. Always aim high Jesinta and reach for athe stars, as you will always shine.
Oh what a great mum Jesinta has. Children these days (especially girls) can be really horrible. Jestinta was lucky to have a mum with good common sense, practical advice and who has obviously instilled resilience in her. Good advice for a lot of us. Sometimes changing schools and giving your child a fresh start is the only option. A nice article. And a refreshing change from the celebrity PR nonsense articles. Good job.

True Confessions Agony Aunt: I hate my StepsonTrue Confessions Agony Aunt: I hate my StepsonAre you kidding me?? For all these people who have commented " you don't know what it's like to be a step parent" blah blah blah.... who are you trying to kid?? And for those saying that you have your own kids and step kids and the step kids are manipulative etc etc, are you blind and dumb? Your kids are not perfect either i bet! I bet your kids are just as rude when you are not around! I have a 12 year old daughter and i have been with my partner for 5 years. He struggles alot with my daughter because she gives him hell. She has said several times she wishes it was just me and her again, but because my partner loves me he sticks it out and knows that it's just her trying to get her own way. He loves her and would do anything for her no matter what she does, that's what's good parents do. If you can't warm to a child or don't like your soon to be step child then dont marry the parent. You are just being selfish otherwise. Just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot...b81die, Brisbane29 CommentsPost commentView comments

Yes the type of cancer was one of the least lethal but none the less she had cancer attacking her body. she had chemo, i've watched some of my closest friends on chemo and it is always so horrific. She has pushed past that and made brilliant songs. Her music is heartfelt. She sis so beautiful and in her flim clips she dresses with dignity and respect unlike other artist who just let everything hang out and sing about sex, drugs and alcohol. She was put on the voice because she is ment to be there the people who run the show chose her. don't like it ? simple don't watch it. If you don't like her as an artist fine, don't buy her albums. She is human and she has feelings, give the woman a break.Cathh.Ann, QLD, Gold Coast28 CommentsPost commentView comments Darren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaDarren Hayes dishes: I know the real DeltaI love her !!wiz, melbourne16 CommentsPost commentView comments Grant and Candice: Why they splitGrant and Candice: Why they splitGive the guy a break!
